Freeview HD products to be tested next month.

The Digital TV Group (DTG) has revealed that the test and conformance regime for Freeview HD will begin this month while product testing will kick off in October. With launch of the regime due to be announced at the IBS broadcast tech show in Amsterdam later this month, it's clear that the DTG is keen to ensure that all Freeview HD equipment (including Freeview+HD Personal Video Recorders) reaches peak levels of compliance. The testing marks the start of what is seen by many as a milestone in the history of UK televisual broadcasting. Freeview HD will offer free high definition content to home all across the country. The only foreseeable cost is in that people will most likely have to upgrade their standard definition Freeview box if they hope to make the most of the HD broadcasts. A few however will be capable of receiving the content through a firmware update. The service is scheduled to launch on December 2nd and will first be available to the areas covered by the Winter Hill transmitter - Liverpool and Manchester.

Philips releases wireless HDMI solution

If there's one thing that's annoying about wall mounting your brand new flatscreen TV, it's the fact that you have to sort out what to do with the unsightly wires. Do you run them behind the plasterboard? Do you hide them with some moulding or trunking? Whatever solution you choose, chances are it won't be anywhere near as simple or as easy on the eye as the Philips Wireless HDTV Link. Allowing you to view 1080p content on your TV screen while the source is up to 20m away, the Wireless HDTV Link is all set to trump similar models that have been released previously. Thanks to the on-board digital wireless technology, the Wireless HDTV Link will allegedly offer a crystal clear image without any hint of deterioration – a major problem with many of the aforementioned solutions. The model will house plenty of connectivity including two HDMI slots and a pair of components. A UK launch date and price haven't been confirmed yet, but it should cost somewhere in the region of £350.

Consumer 3D Blu-ray on its way...

Over the past year, 3D movies have taken cinemas by storm. With most multiplexes now packing the digital projectors required, it’s no surprise that a consumer solution would be hot on its heels. Well after many, many months of various companies developing 3D technology for home use, the Blu-ray Disc Association has announced that they’ll be unveiling the standard specifications for Full HD 3D Blu-ray in December. The idea behind the move is that consumer electronics companies will now have guideline to work to when developing 3D equipment. As such it should see a host of new 3D products hit the market over the next year. The announcement came as a relief to many consumers who feared that another format war was inevitable between a potential new 3D technology and Blu-ray. While not all companies have been so swift to jump on the three-dimensional bandwagon, Panasonic has been keen to push the technology by featuring it prominently in their 2010 range. Looking to be the first company to release Full HD 3D for the home, the Japanese electronics giant has been keen to point out that they aren’t merely another manufacturer adopting the technology - they’ve had their Hollywood research lab looking exclusively at 3D for some time. While the company is aware that they’re unlikely to see much profit from the 3D push for the first couple of years, they anticipate that it will eventually pay off due to the amount of money that movie studios are pumping into 3D content right now. No sooner had the BDA made its announcement at the IFA in Berlin, Sony backed them up by announcing their devotion to third dimension with news that 2010 would see them brining a whole host of 3D gear to the market. Most interesting however is the news that the PlayStation 3 would receive an upgrade sometime next year in order to facilitate the playback of both Blu-ray movies and games. If the PS3 does for 3D what it did for Blu-ray back in the day, we could see the technology taking off at a breathtaking pace. Needless to say, next year is sure to spell the beginning of a new era in home entertainment.

It was...The AV Event Of The Year @ Elland Road

Following last year's success at Bristol Zoo, GV Multi-media once again held The Audio-Visual Event Of The Year. Held on 2nd June at Elland Road Football Ground in Leeds, the show played host to a wealth of manufacturers who were all eager to showcase their latest products. Jo Stewart, event organiser and manager of the Middlesbrough branch, commented that, “The event was very well attended and the first one we have held in the North. We are planning to hold many more as it was such a huge success. The feedback from the both customers and suppliers has been phenomenal.” The show saw 80 delegates in attendance. Ranging from AV professionals through to university, council and police staff, all that attended were keen to learn of the latest AV equipment available. Chosen for its proximity to multiple GV Multi-media branches, Elland Road looked to be an ideal location for the event. This certainly proved to be the case when a number of attendees took up the opportunity for a tour of the Leeds United ground with an ex-player. As such, the show wasn’t just a display of some of the finest innovations in technology - it was also a great day out for footie fans. With the standard from each company being so consistently high, no single product stood out as the highlight of the show. Naturally, this saw delegates flocking to each seminar in order to learn more about their potential new equipment. Jo went on to say, “The range of products on display covered the full spectrum of AV. There are already multiple on-site demonstrations and follow up visits arranged!” Jo and fellow organiser/Manchester branch manager Jain McGarty would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a huge success.
